The New Year Edit

After quite literally years of saying, “I really must get back writing a blog”, I have decided that 2018 is the year. So here I am on January 31st writing my first post (since having it on my to do list since the beginning of the month...)

So for a very quick introduction for those who don’t know me - I am Lauren Taylor, a contemporary jeweller and rope spinner based in Stockport, South Manchester. My current collections are a celebration of humble, locally sourced materials and time-honoured craftsmanship, centred on a passion for hand spinning rope. The traditional technique is developed and adapted to create statement, tactile jewellery with a strong contemporary feel. I have spent the last couple of years establishing myself as a maker and creative professional, exhibiting at contemporary craft shows, building a list of stockists, and running creative workshops.

I’m going to use this space as a journal, where I will round up my achievements at the end of each month - and perhaps elaborate a little on some of my more content heavy Instagram posts! I want to highlight and acknowledge some of the trials and tribulations of being a self-employed creative, as well as discussing the triumphant times. New Year Edit:

January is a funny old month, after the stampede of October, November, December and the inevitable overindulgence following your last show of the year. January seems like you should be resting and recharging, yet suddenly you are faced with another wave of work to be applications, tax returns, end of year reflections to name a few. Listening to discussions of ‘new beginnings’ and seeing everyone merrily ‘dream, plan, do’ing is wonderful, but to me, it’s felt a bit bitter sweet. Like one wrong step or decision, and the whole year could crumble away in front of my eyes...the possibilities a new year holds can seem boundless and sometimes, quite daunting. So I found a little quote while wandering round the internet, and it says:

“I am learning everyday to allow the space between where I am and where I want to be, to inspire me and not terrify me”

Being a designer maker, creative buisness owner is my vocation and when I look back on my journey so far; I look back with joy and pride. I needed to feel inspired, not terrified! So...I’ve done my tax return, I’ve got up to date with my books, I’ve made a ‘show folder’ and reviewed the success of each event I took part in and I have begun my show application prep, I’ve even managed to squeeze a bit of time in for playing around with some yarn! It wasn’t all that bad when I broke my To Do list down into manageable chunks...after my little wobble, I did January my way!
